Are Expensive Wines Worth the Price?
The answer to this question really depends on both your knowledge and your experience of wine. If you really know your wines then the answer, of course, will be a definite yes. But if you know little of wine then you might have often pondered the question of how much should I pay for a good tasting bottle of wine? Maybe you can't guess the difference between a £10 bottle of wine or a bottle costing £30 or even £300.
Here at Smart Gifts we like wine... a lot! But we've often said you only really need to pay around £10-15 for a good tasting bottle of wine and should you pay more for red wine than white wine?
I recently came across an article that straight away caught my attention. It's a wonderful story by Greg Mann who wrote an article on Quora so just thought I would share. I did think for a moment and asked myself is it possible I would pay a few hundred pounds for a bottle of wine to share that same experience?
Greg, writes about the time he and his wife took a client to dinner which had one of the best cellars on the West Coast (US). The sommelier visited the table and Greg told him he and is guests were interested in a White Burgundy. The Sommelier returned with a binder the thickness of a phone book and flipped to a single page with bottles that started at $500 and quickly escalated to five times that amount. These far surpassed anything Greg had ever spent on wine, but he reminded himself how important his client was.
So thinking, in for a penny, in for a pound he requested "a wine with great expressions of nougat, cream, and honey... what would you recommend?" Having recommended a Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru the sommelier returned to the table with his assistant. He opened and tasted the wine and began to cure the wine glasses. From four feet away, the aromas were effusive and heady; at the table they were intoxicating. Everyone raised a toast and swirled their glasses, and drew into their mouths wine that was thick as olive oil. The flavors began to unwind in a spiral of toast and butter, honey and fruit, with citrus and honeysuckle peeking through. All five at the table had a simultaneous wine orgasm! The client declared it to be the best wine she'd ever experienced, and the table was soon abuzz with grand proclamations.
Greg was the only one aware of the cost and says "To this day, the Montrachet stands out as the best wine I've ever had".
So I think it suffices to say that wine is not about what it costs but is definitely all about an experience you'll always remember.
