The Lost Art Of Handwritten Cards And How To Master It
Have you ever realised that you have lots of things to be grateful for? There are tons of everyday things that we take for granted: nature, our friends, and our family are just some of them. And when someone does something nice for you, the natural reaction is to be grateful. Gratitude is a positive attitude that we should all be wanting to cultivate, as research has shown that grateful people are more likely to be happy, healthy, and cope with stress better. But how to express gratitude? Yes, you can say thank you, of course. Wouldn't it be more special to make sure your gratitude leaves a lasting impression though? You can do that by sending a thank you card. Handwritten cards may seem old school, but there is something charming about them too. If you'd like to find out the value of a well-written thank you card or if you need some inspiration about what to write in a thank you card, keep reading.
The value of a well-written thank you note: Why send a handwritten thank you card?
Sure, if someone has done something special for you, you can always send them an e-mail or a Whatsapp to say thank you. But although technology has improved our lives in many ways, it has also taken away some of the thrills experienced when life went on at a slower pace and people had more time for thoughtful interactions. Imagine the excitement of someone opening an envelope as it reveals a beautifully handwritten card with a personal message. That is something that we can hardly experience when receiving a text message or a “digital thank you”.
Sending a handwritten card says a lot about you and about how you value other people: it says you have spent some valuable time writing the card (which takes longer than sending an SMS or an email), and it also says that you consider the other person special enough to spend time writing to them. Also, sending a handwritten note can make your feelings of gratitude more real and memorable. As you probably know, actions speak louder than words! The person reading your card will feel grateful to you for such a thoughtful detail, and that can help create a circle of gratitude – and who wouldn't like that?
What to write in a thank you card
If you have never sent a handwritten thank you note, you may be worried about making a mistake or not being able to put your feelings into writing. It's ok, we've all been there. But the good news is that writing a card that makes the other person feel special is not hard. All you need to do is make sure you include three things.
Yes, just three: What, How, and Why.
One: Say what you're grateful for
The first step is to start your message by writing about what the other person did for you. Recreate the situation and write about what you were going through at the time. Make sure you are as specific as possible.
Two: Write about your feelings
The second step is to tell the other person how their act of kindness made you feel. You may want to take some time to think about this before starting to write. Also, don't just say it made you feel grateful. For example, did it also make you feel relieved, happy, less confused, less lonely?
Three: Say why it's important
The third step, last but not least, is tell the other person why their actions were important to you. Maybe they made you realise that you were not alone, or maybe they made you recover your faith in humanity. Whatever it is, be specific, and then finish the note off with a big thank you.
