What can I send a dear friend living in Manchester to cheer her up?
Enquiry of the week is from Alana who phoned us for suggestions to have something delivered to her friend, stuck in her University apartment suffering from the flu. Alana just wanted something to make her friend smile and had no idea what was available in the UK and wanted some interesting ideas. More importantly, she just wanted to order and pay over the internet with next day delivery.
So far all Alana could find, with a quick search on Google, was huge fruit baskets or hampers of unhealthy food! "Do you sell fruit dipped in chocolate or freshly baked cookies?" she asked.
We went through a few options... our fruit baskets are designed mostly for just one person so they're smaller and a lot more manageable to receive delivery. I can remember when I ordered a fruit basket for my mum and was alarmed at the size of it when it arrived. It was full of fruit I wouldn't recommend trying to battle with when feeling ill. Especially the giant pineapple which weighed a tonne. I actually found myself apologising, to my forgiving mum, about the awful basket of fruit I had sent her.
This is one of the reasons why we have created fruit baskets, alongside all the other zillions of arrangements we offer. Just so they would be what people would actually want to receive and eat! If you're feeling ill, we feel you simply want a nice fresh orange or apple. And a healthy banana, with a slice of cake of course!
Anyhow, nothing would convince Alana to purchase a basket of fruit. No matter how enticing I thought I made it all sound. I was, by this stage, starting to fancy some of those delicious American strawberries dipped in chocolate... the image of which would not budge from my mind since the start of the enquiry!
I went on to recommend our popular range of cookies and muffins which can be presented in a basket or an Emma Bridgewater tin. I reassured her they were all hand baked, but would arrive in cellophane wrappers, with at least a 2-3 week sell by date on them, so not exactly freshly baked. But... even better, because some could be saved and still be fresh. Alana was still not convinced as everything we had was too much for just one person! All I could think was, I know I wouldn't complain if someone sent me half a dozen chocolate muffins with a few large cookies. They wouldn't hang around for very long and I'm pretty sure they would bring a huge smile to my face.
Eventually, we settled on an ideal gift.... our pretty as cupcakes Birthday Gift Basket with Chocolates. All we had to do was switch the birthday balloon for a get well soon balloon. It is delightfully unhealthy and probably a bit too much for one person, but who am I to argue and here's hoping this made Alana's friend very happy.
