Tips for a Beach Picnic
This summer, we're enjoying lots of beautifully hot days that turn into delightfully warm evenings - where you can spend long days with your loved ones eating delicious food and refreshing drinks. The best place to spend a day with friends and family is the seaside, developing a nice tan and sharing memories with those closest to you. Here at Smart Gift, we've decided to put a little blog post together of the best foods to eat on a family day out by the sea - those that will satisfy your taste buds and are great to share! With a portable picnic basket or a cool bag, these are all foods to keep you refreshed, hydrated and saving money in the sun.
We find it's good to make sure your food choices will not make you thirsty - avoid those salty snacks, like nuts and crisps, that require a constant supply of water alongside them. You should also forget dairy products, such as yoghurts, as they are unstable food products in the heat. You don't want to waste money, or time, by having to throw these products away before having the chance to consume them! Although nutritious, there are other options you can find more appropriate for this wonderful occasion.
So here's our list of the best beach friendly foods which all rightfully earn their place in your cool bag!
Fruit
Freezing fruit, such as grapes and berries, provides a healthy and nutritious snack which will be freshing for young children. It is also great for keeping other items cool! If you have time to prep, you can turn these frozen fruits into wonderful smoothies and juices to share too - which saves you having to buy expensive fruit coolers from coffee houses and shops!Bananas are also a great choice, because not only are they sand-proof (which is very important with young messy children) but, they are rich in potassium too - so they will refresh and provide endless energy for your body! Something very important when spending time in the sun...
Crackers
Make sure you choose whole grain or crackers filled with seeds to keep those energy levels up - also great to eat with your bananas! You can buy in bulk, and can enjoy with lots of great dips - such as hummus or salsa! They don't require plates, and a big sharer bag is brilliant between a large group too.
Vegetables
Okay before you say "are you joking"? I guarantee you will be glad you made this option. If you pre-prepare your veggies by freezing them in plastic bags and add some ice too they will also help to keep everything else cool. Agreed, you wouldn't normally take a bag of veg along to a picnic but for the beach, you'll find sliced cucumber, carrot and celery sticks just juicey cripsy and refreshing. Add a lemon slice to keep them extra crisp and fresh!
Marianted Meats
Skip sandwiches and include meat skewers instead. Add delicious flavours to your meats by marianting them overnight. Simply add your favourite herbs and spices to roasted chicken in a bowl and pop in the refrigerator. Skewers are handy, lightweight and with all that added flavour you won't miss the bread. They're also exciting ways to get young children to try more flavours and incorporate delicious snacks into their diet from a young age.
Bottled Water
Yes it's tempting to take along fruity fizzy drinks or a bottle of wine, but you must make sure you bring lots and lots of water too. Freeze your water bottles the night before. Remember though to pour a little out to allow the water to expand before adding them to the freezer! It's simply essential to be hydrated on the beach. You can have a bottle of bubbly or fizzy pop for the kids, as long as you are keeping topped up with water too!
