Make Time for a Picnic!
Have we lost the art of the Great British picnic? I'm guilty of planning the perfect posh picnic, in my mind at least, with traditional willow basket, filled with delicious cheese, crackers and wine, homemade pickle, crisps and beautifully prepared salad and of course the all important Scotch Egg! Yet find myself grabbing pre-packaged sandwiches, from the nearest convenience store, together with unhealthy snacks that will just do!
Today the picnic is about making the most of the short-lived British Summertime. When the sun decides to show it's face it's lovely to grab some food and drink and head for the countryside.
The word Picnic (or "pique-nique") is of French origin which simply means to pick at food! "nique" means something small or of no value. But, it was the Victorians who made the picnic an elaborate feast. Simplicity was not the Victorian's strong point and it became something of a banquet out of doors with lavish food and drink to be enjoyed by all.
Our picnic hampers include a traditional style wicker basket, complete with china plates and cutlery. They're ready filled with delicious snacks and wine, all you'll need to grab is your blanket... and possibly you're brolly! Not quite as lavish as the Victorians picnic basket would be, but nonetheless packed with traditonal foods such as pate, cheese, dundee cake and ginger beer.
Our picnic hampers are the perfect treat for a couple celebrating an engagement or anniversary or a newly married couple who can look forward to planning a romantic getaway as soon as the sun shines.
